Coffee and Cannabis
Two ritual based substances that complement each other wonderfully and it's not just in your head. From a philosophical standpoint, coffee represents a transition state; from sleep to wakeful. In a similar vein cannabis represents a shift in consciousness towards a more present perspective. It seems natural that the two can work in unison to create a heightened experience.
From preparation to consumption the two go hand-in-hand. I keep it simple, my preferred method preparing coffee is in a French press; measuring, grinding, and allowing time to steep. While providing the water and coffee grounds enough time to consider their new existence together you have a window of opportunity prepare your joint; once again measuring and grinding to release the aromatic terpenes that tease the senses with expectation of what is to come.
The entire process can be completed while distracted with your mind on other things but when done in a focused, deliberate manner takes on a special meaning. Once the preparation is complete, the consumption can begin with the rising coffee vapors and trail of smoke from your joint hinting at the synergistic chemical reaction occurring inside of you.
There's some sound science as to why the two pair so well. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that works by inhibiting neurotransmitters to keep you awake. Caffeine's euphoric effects are caused by cortisol and adrenaline, which raise blood pressure and boost energy supplies, producing feelings of power and pleasure. The high from cannabis is caused by cannabinoids activating the brain's reward system by binding to special receptors in your neurons. At the end of the day our bodies are complex communication networks where the output (effect) can be induced by the input (ingredients).
In other words, coffee and cannabis have a synergistic effect when combined together. One enhances the effects of the other!
A personal favorite of mine is cannabis infused bulletproof coffee. To prepare this superfood cocktail, you take brewed coffee and add a tablespoon of grass-fed butter and a tablespoon of cannabis MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil. The high fat content of this concoction makes me feel like I'm floating on air all day long without the crash that typically follows after a morning cup of joe.
The end goal of any combination is to have both substances working in unison and enhancing the effects of the another.
While cannabis in my eyes has the uncanny ability to pair well with many of my favorite things, nothing within my world of ritualistic pairings seems to offer the same feeling as a fresh cup of black coffee and a joint. There is something primal about this pairing that feels so very right.
Caffeine has been shown to enhance memory, mood, performance, and energy levels in numerous studies. Cannabis effects can vary based on the strain or product you're consuming so if you can match your strain to your morning coffee ritual and set your intentions you may find yourself in a more productive and creative mindset to kick off your day.
